Complete renovation of the Tomb of Gül Baba and its surroundings

Gül Baba, also known as the “Father of Roses”, an Ottoman Bektashi dervish (a fighting Muslim monk) died on the 2nd of September, 1541, on the thanksgiving ceremony celebrating the capture of Buda, according to the legend. To honour him, a spectacular funeral was held, which was attended – again, according to the legend – even by the sultan Suleiman I. A tomb was built above his grave by Yahyapaşazade Mehmet, the pasha of Buda between 1543 and 1548. Since then the tomb is a place of pilgrimage among Muslims around the world, and a popular sight for tourists as well.

The tomb was reshaped several times over the centuries. Today’s appearance, which is the closest to the original, was achieved during the reconstruction works held between 1960 and 1961, and in 1996. For the next phase of the renovation, which begun in the summer of 2016, DDC transported 940 m³ of its ready-mixed concrete products, and 275 tons of its cement products to ZÁÉV Építőipari Zrt., the construction company commissioned to carry out the works by the Hungarian National Asset Management Inc. The project was funded by the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA).
