Community Herbarium and Educational Centre in Palkonya

The aim of the project is to raise the awareness of local people, and especially children, of their natural surroundings through collecting and growing herbs and green spices in a herbarium, collecting mushrooms or observing unique species of butterflies. For the growing of the herbs and spices, the people collect rainwater, produce compost as fertiliser and use natural herbicides. With the help of a drying machine, operated with solar and wind power, the herbs, spices and mushrooms are dried and used for teas or food seasonings. A roofed space next to the herbarium serves as an educational centre, where people meet not only to learn about nature, but also to taste it in the form of herbal teas.

The project's handover ceremony took place on 26 September 2016, when the mayor of Palkonya and Technical Director of DDC Adam Müller officially opened the herbarium to the public. DDC donated HUF 1.500.000 for realisation of the project.
