Renovation of the Grand Boulevard tramway track

In the summer of 2018 the renovation works of the 23 year-old, overused tramway tracks of the Grand Boulevard continued. Action was necessary because certain parts of the previously constructed tramway cracked and sank, which slowed down or completely stopped the traffic on tram routes 4 and 6.

Unlike previous occasions during the reconstruction concrete was used, which proved to be a better solution from several aspects. The use of concrete is definitely a more durable solution, as with the proper mixing and aftercare its lifespan can be lengthier as opposed to other coverings. Its colour is light grey, therefore due to its reflective effect it absorbs less heat than for example the darker asphalt. One of the most critical parts of the tramway track is the one where the rails are in contact with the covering between them. Concrete turns out to be an excellent solution again as the rail is placed in a concrete cradle, which is treated with adhesion coating on one of its sides. The adhesive tensile strength of the concrete must be 1.5 N/mm². When adjusting the track, a two-component synthetic rubber powder is added to perfectly enclose the rail to prevent the danger of turning and at the same time reduce the volume of the wheels and help avoid the penetration of water.

Our company’s Hajóállomás Street plant manufactured and transported a total of 1800 m³ of CP4/2,7-22-F3-XF4 and C30/37-XC2-XF1-24-F3 type concrete products for the project between early July and late August. By using air entertaining admixture, they produced freeze resistant concrete from crushed stone aggregate. The ready-mixed concrete was worked into the prepared reinforcing mesh with vibratory screed method. After compression a vapour barrier layer was sprayed on the surface of the newly laid concrete for the proper aftercare purposes. The berth of the rail, the concrete cradle was treated with a foil cover.

The work was carried out by TTD Expert Zrt. During construction they had to face several challenges since narrow spaces, intersections and complicated traffic conditions interfered with the process. Besides temporarily turning the concerned part of the Grand Boulevard into a single-track road, further traffic restrictions had to be effected on the arrival of the trucks transporting the ready-mixed concrete and the concrete pump.
